Exploring the geeky side…

Left and right brain vying for control… and working in concert.”
~ Luna

A little insight into my particular left brain / right brain pas de deux…
Each geek artist’s dance is unique to them… this is mine :)

Much of this blog explores the right-brain artist side… This section is a little intro and info about the left-brain side of me…

  • the inquisitive side that loves to explore, play with, and learn new technology…
  • the computational side that thinks in code, concepts and numbers…
  • the quantitative business side that sees the patterns coalesce from the data…
  • the analytical side that loves to crunch on a design conundrum and come up with a software solution…
  • the designer side that loves to create digital graphics, interfaces and visualizations…

another dimension of the creative chaos.

Just an introduction here…
You will soon find more info about “who I am ” and what I do in this regard at LunaTekz.com, my design and development company.
(website under construction – More about Lunatekz below…)

I briefly mention my technology background on my About page: An M.B.A. in Quantitative Analysis / Operations Research, who changed gears and became a Software Developer. During the course of my professional career, I have been:

  • an analyst for an investment bank
  • a one-woman IT department for a Park Avenue law firm: from network administration to application development to hardware maintenance.
  • a freelance web designer, graphic designer & systems consultant
  • An account manager, technical liaison and internal consultant for an eCommerce software company.
  • a business analyst
  • a systems design analyst
  • a software developer/Lead programmer analyst for a large private company: designing & developing enterprise level applications
  • a UX designer.
  • all while simultaneously engaged in a very active career as a professional vocalist and, in recent years, an indie singer/songwriter

Some items currently in my “technology tool chest”:

.NET, C#, WPF, Silverlight, iPhone, WEB 2.0, SOA and Web services, AJAX, Java, J2EE, Java Server Pages (JSP), Servlets, Visual Basic 6.0, Active Server Pages (ASP), PHP, XML, XSLT, VBScript, JavaScript, HTML, XHTML, DHTML, SQL, LDAP, Active Directory, ADSI, Windows Script Host, MS SQL Server, DB2, Oracle, MySQL, BEA WebLogic, IIS, Tomcat, Linux, WordPress, Dreamweaver, MS Visual Studio (2005 and 2008), Eclipse, BEA Workshop, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, Cubase, Sonar

(I’m sure I forgot a few…)

The lists leans heavily toward Enterprise-level technology & tools, so you are correct in surmising that I’ve spent most of my development career in the Corporate tech world. But, as with most technology professionals, my tool chest gets added to on a frequent basis as new tech evolves or a need is encountered to utilize an existing technology. What I don’t know… I learn :)

Current concentration & expansion includes Open Source languages and tools, Web x.0, the semantic and Semantic web (microformats, RDF, etc.), social media and social networking technologies and APIs, design and development for the iPhone and other mobile devices… for starters. I’m sure that will change as new stuff emerges and becomes the heralded solution of the day. Always experimenting…

And then there’s the artistic side and tech tools in support of it…
I’ve been concentrating more time on my photographic art and business and enhancing my skill with related technologies. That’s a whole ‘nother world of opportunity! And always, exploring new music technology to enhance my songwriting, recording, and artistic promotion.

So much to learn and dig into… so little time! It’s a pretty exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) time we live in :)

LunaTekz has been “in existence” for a few years, but with my software development dance card pretty much filled by my day gig and a need to devote other available waking hours to my music and art, it has pretty much taken a back seat… quietly working on some independent projects, but not getting much of my attention.

That’s all a-changin’… “as we speak!”

After years of corporate employment, I’ve decided it’s time to strike out on my own… to explore the opportunities in this volatile & exciting technological environment and build my own design and development company (in addition to expanding my focus and efforts on my music and artistic projects… more creative juggling). Morphing from employee to entrepreneur is an interesting paradigm shift and I’m navigating those challenging waters, learning and unlearning as I go.

Although I have been considering this for a few years, I made the decision to move on it in 2009, so it’s all still fairly new and an ongoing exercise in evolution and balance. In other words…

watch this space!
